Important Aircon Recharge Considerations
Having a Leak Free System to start with is key.
*leak sealers can work but will wreak havoc to your system or the next technician who needs to service or make repairs to the system
**Air/moisture is the killer of AC System Components and Compressor
- Vacuum for a minimum of 45 minutes to remove air and moisture, the longer the better - your choice
- Careful purging of all lines of oxygen pre recharging
- Injection of oil and/or dye - NOT air!!!
Recharging 101:
- Always use new AC Gas not Gas from a recovered system unless you absolutely know Gas is clean and zero contaminants are present
- Strictly stick to manufacturers fill capacity, too little gas will not be cold, too much risks damaging your compressor - also the system may not blow cold! Putting more gas in won't make it colder!
** systems left unconnected for weeks/months due to a crash or engine replacement should be filled with OFN nitrogen and sealed until recommissioned.
In this scenario it is essential to vacuum for the longest time possible - at the very least for 2 - 3 hours to remove all moisture from the system. Not only does it ensure the best job but it also provides the highest success rate and long term reliability of your AC system.
Specialist Equipment vs automatic A/C Machines
- A vacuum unit will not only pull a vacuum for as long as you like, it also pulls down to 0.15 microns
- Automatic Machines pull vacuum for a minimum time and not down to the micron level of a dedicated unit - contaminants will still remain in the system
- By following a very careful process absolutely no air will be reintroduced into the system - attention taken purging all lines, connectors, bleeding valves to the refill gas bottle etc...
Initial Checks
- System current status /operation check
- LS and HS pressures within range, AC Compressor is engaging
- No visible leaks, pressure is holding
Recharge Process
- Complete recovery and evacuation of old gas
- Initial vacuum, and leak test
- Nitrogen Pressure test
- Main vacuum 30+ mins to 0.15 microns
- Oil balance, Dye injection
- Recharging of gas to manufacturers specification
Finishing up
- Confirm system pressures, no loss of pressure and no visible leaks
- Air is blowing nice and cold - at a minimum <15 degrees lower than ambient (outside temperature), although you should expect at least between 8 and 12 degrees for a healthy working AC system
