eazy-GT Tuning Glossary A - Z

Bolt-On's - if you think this list is not right send an enquiry and we will amend or add in :)

Bolt-On's consist of:

Exhaust Manifold/Headers, CAT-Back Exhaust, Muffler/Backbox, Downpipe, Wastegate,  CAI, Throttlebody, Intake Manifold, Jenvey Runners, High Flow Injectors, Camshafts, Springs, Roller Rockers,  Intercooler, UD Pulley, Ignition Box, Lightened Flywheel, Balanced HD Clutch, Piggyback Harness (trick the system vs program the system).

Debatable Items:

Ported Heads, Bigger Valves, Turbos, Superchargers, Nitrous.

Cam-Only

A level of tune and power level benchmark where only the cam is changed - heads have never been off the car, i.e. still running standard heads.

In the US market 'Cam-Only' benchmark is 500 wheel horsepower measured on a Dynojet Dynamometer for Corvette and Camaro LS3 powered cars.

Cold Air Intake (CAI)

A directly routed air system that efficiently routes incoming air to the airbox.  Air velocity rapidly flows through the air filter providing the engine with 'RAM' air at speed = the coldest dense air charge possible.  Cold dense air + more fuel = more power.

DTC

Diagnostic Trouble Codes are stored within cars ECU.  Detected from sensors and pre-programmed detectable conditions of the cars software/OS, these get communicated via the CAN-BUS,  Also can be referred to as EML or MIL codes.

Forced Induction (FI)

Supercharged (mechanically driven, usually by a belt) or Turbocharged technology (innovatively harnessed/driven by exhaust gas flow).  Dense air charge is force fed with huge amounts of fuel into the engine combustion chambers.  This creates high to extreme levels of power and torque which creates a very enjoyable driving experience and exhilarating ride.

Lambda

Air Fuel ratio represented in scientific notation.

For gasoline fuel (E0) 14.7:1 A/F = 1.0 Lambda = EQ 1.0

Useful for tuning especially when different grades or quality of fuels are used.

OBD, OBD-II

On Board Diagnostic port.  This is a port on the car that can be plugged into for diagnosing electronic, ECU or BCM issues with the vehicle.  Also can be used for updating software and/or firmware on the vehicle.  OBD-II is the second generation of this port with updated protocols for communication found in more modern cars after 2000.

Remap vs getting a "Tune"

Essentially the same thing.  Based on Mapping/Tuning software technology, car community or geographical locations, 'remapping' and 'tuning' are often interchangeably referenced.  This ultimately is the process to upgrade manufacturers software settings and map configurations to optimise the performance of your engine.

TPS

Throttle Position Sensor

VE

1. Volumetric Efficiency

2. A model car produced by Holden or HSV

VMAX

Speed limiter of the car.  As standard most cars where capable are configured from the factory to cut spark or fuel when 155MPH (250km/h) has been reached.  During a remap this setting can be updated or removed.  Useful if you do track days at Silverstone (or other tracks) and your car has the capability.

WOT

Wide Open Throttle, when the throttle pedal is essentially at it's fully depressed position i.e. 'on the floor' - often referred to in tuning maps as 'Absolute Throttle Position'
